Grant Creates Security and Serenity at Erie Cancer Wellness Center

Feb 25, 2026

At the Erie Cancer Wellness Center, serenity grows in unexpected ways. Serenity lives in the calmness of tranquil setting, in the laughter of a support group, and the steady comfort of safety.

That sense of safety was not always certain. Prior to a recent $12,952 grant from The Erie Community Foundation, the all-female staff worried daily about the absence of a security system. The desire to remain open to individuals in need and welcoming to groups was at odds with the need to feel secure.

With the Foundation’s support, the Center upgraded the security system and repaired the HVAC system, two simple but transformative improvements changed everything. “Now, we have peace of mind with security and a better airflow system,” said Executive Director Jackie Wassel. “We can finally focus fully on our mission, knowing that our staff, volunteers, and families all feel safe and comfortable.”

That peace of mind sparked new possibilities. Volunteers eagerly offered to greet patients at the front door, bringing warmth and instant connection to those who are dealing with cancer and who need a warm smile.  With this renewed engagement, the Center eliminated a part-time position and redirected funds back into programming.

Now celebrating its third anniversary, the Erie Cancer Wellness Center has blossomed into one of Erie’s most meaningful community resources. With more than 60 volunteers and a growing network of partners, the Erie Cancer Wellness Center continues to grow in both reach and compassion.

In January of 2025, the Center opened a dedicated children’s space.  The idea grew from a simple but powerful need to give families to find comfort and connection during some of life’s most difficult moments. The new space provides a safe, welcoming environment where families can gather, support one another, and heal alongside others who truly understand. The children’s space gives families a sense of normalcy and belonging and reminds every child that even during uncertain times, they are not alone.

The Feige family has been part of the Center since its opening in 2024 because in 2022, their then two-year-old daughter Millie was diagnosed with leukemia.  The entire family, including Millie’s two brothers, participated in kid art therapy and yoga classes, and attended events such as the Seawolves game for the Center’s birthday celebration.  Millie rang her bell this past summer and is now cancer free, but the family remains actively involved.  “The center and community have been a godsend for my family,” said Lillybeth, Millie’s mom.  “We are so grateful for the safe space.”

Building on the success of its children’s programming, the Erie Cancer Wellness Center has also expanded to better support men in the community like Millie’s dad.  Through the new men’s support groups and events, such as golf outings, game nights and fishing charters, the Center is creating opportunities for men to connect, share experiences, and find strength in one another.  These programs create camaraderie and healing, reminding participants that wellness is not a solitary journey, but one shared by a community.

What began as a grant to install a security system and fix an HVAC system has had a rippled effect creating a renewed sense of safety, belonging, and hope for everyone who walks through the Erie Cancer Wellness Center’s doors.

“At the Erie Cancer and Wellness Center, healing is more than treatment; it’s connection, courage, and community,” added Wassel.
