The North East Community Foundation Supports Library Accessibility

Apr 28, 2026

With support from The North East Community Foundation (NECF) and other partners, the McCord Memorial Library completed a critical elevator modernization project to ensure continued accessibility for all patrons.

Originally installed in the early 1990s, the library’s elevator was operating on an aging 30-year-old system. While still functional, the risk of a major breakdown, and potentially months-long delays for replacement parts, posed a serious threat to consistent access. Given the building’s two levels, including a lower-level children’s library, the elevator is essential for individuals with mobility challenges, caregivers with strollers, and staff transporting materials.

The $141,000 project, completed between August and September 2025, included installation of a new controller, upgraded mechanical systems, emergency power features, and necessary electrical improvements to meet current code requirements.

Funding was made possible through a collaborative effort, including support from ECGRA, The Hirtzel Foundation, community donors, and NECF.

Thanks to this investment, the library can continue to provide reliable, inclusive access to its programs and resources. Patrons and staff alike have expressed appreciation for the upgrades, recognizing the elevator as a vital part of ensuring everyone can fully experience the library, regardless of mobility.
