Some childhood dreams are simple.

For four-year-old Stephen—known as Stevie to his family—it was seeing the ocean for the very first time.

Stevie was diagnosed as an infant with a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and other ongoing health challenges. Despite countless doctor’s appointments, daily medications, and physical setbacks, his family describes him as energetic, adventurous, and full of joy. Like many children his age, Stevie loved watching Bluey. One episode in particular captured his imagination: a trip to the beach.

There was just one problem.

He had never seen one.

When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked Stevie what he wished for, he didn’t ask for toys or superheroes. He wished to feel warm sand beneath his feet and splash in the waves just like the characters he loved on television.

Because of the generosity of donors—including those who gave during Erie Gives—that wish became a reality.

Stevie and his family traveled to North Carolina, where they stayed just steps from the beach. For the first time, he searched for seashells and crabs in the sand, played in the ocean, explored the North Carolina Aquarium, and visited the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. It was a trip filled with laughter, discovery, and memories that his family will cherish forever.

For children facing critical illnesses, a wish is about much more than a vacation.

It provides a break from hospital rooms, treatments, and uncertainty. It gives families the chance to spend uninterrupted time together creating joyful memories instead of focusing on diagnoses and appointments. For a little while, children simply get to be children again.

Those moments have a lasting impact.

Research has shown that wish experiences can improve emotional well-being, strengthen family bonds, and provide hope during some of life’s most difficult seasons. They remind families that they are surrounded by a community that believes in them and wants to walk beside them.

That is what Erie Gives helps make possible.

Every donation supports local children facing extraordinary circumstances, transforming generosity into moments of joy, resilience, and hope. While Stevie’s wish began with a dream of visiting the beach, it became something much greater—a reminder that even during life’s hardest moments, there is still room for wonder.

Sometimes, the greatest gift a community can give isn’t measured in dollars.

Sometimes, it’s measured in footprints left in the sand, laughter shared with family, and a little boy seeing the ocean for the very first time.

This story is part of The Erie Community Foundation’s What Erie Gives Makes Possible series, celebrating the lasting impact of Erie Gives and the power of collective generosity across our community.
