At today’s Erie Women’s Fund Grant Reception, Dafmark Dance Theatrer received a $100,000 grant from the Erie Women’s Fund in support of their Dafmark Creative Arts Center.
The Dafmark Creative Arts Center provides educational programming for Erie youth who live in public housing at the John E. Hornan Garden Apartments. DCAC serves over 100 youth annually providing them with after school activities and summer programming. Some of the programming includes painting, drawing, sewing, theatre, dance, music, and more. Community members skilled in each field come in to teach the children.
“Dafmark’s Creative Arts Center has already proven what an incredible impact they are able to have for students’ educational outcomes, and how poised they are to provide the holistic support needed to help break the cycle of poverty,” said Allison Hodas, EWF chair. “The Erie Women’s Fund is dedicated to Empowering Women and Families, and this project is a great example of that work.”
In addition to the after-school educational programs, DCAC also provides healthy snacks, homework help, and one-on-one tutoring taught by certified teachers. Students at the DCAC enjoy rich cultural experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Each year, they have the opportunity to attend live theatre performances, exposing them to productions that inspire creativity and broaden their horizons. In addition, DCAC hosts an annual youth theatre production where students take center stage, gaining confidence, learning teamwork and showcasing their talents to the community. The arts celebration continues with DCAC’s annual youth art show, held in a gallery setting. This exhibition allows students to present their original works, ranging from paintings and drawings to sculpture and mixed media. DCAC aims to expose youth community members to various forms of art and self-expression.
Since its inception in 2007, EWF has awarded over $1.3 million in grants to the community.
Previous grant recipients also attended the event in recognition of this milestone:This year’s event included updates 2024 major grant recipient, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants – Erie Field Office, represented by Ashley Lawson, Field Office Director.
